Problems of a media student!

I'm aware that I've put one post up today already, but being so eager (and also having done all the work I needed to do today) I've decided "why not write something else?!"

So, as I'm currently a second year media and communications undergraduate, I thought it would be fitting to write a post about the everyday problems faced by media students all around the country... and most likely the world too!

1. People will always ask what you're studying at university, and on replying "media" (of whatever description) they will go silent.... or make some remark about it not being a real subject.

2. You will get the comment, "oh, so all you have to do is watch TV then?!" more times then you dare to count.

3. No one ever believes that it can be, and is a difficult subject to study; nor do they realise just how much work goes in to it.

4. You always have to partake in group work... as a TV programme can't (unfortunately) be filmed by just one person.

5. You don't usually mind doing group work; however you seem to get stuck with the person who doesn't care in the slightest (as with most subjects), or doesn't want to help carry the "heavy" equipment.

6. No one believes there is theory behind media studies (and quite complex theory at that).

7. You have to get; a. freezing, b. soaked or c. boiling hot when out on location. There never seems to be the "perfect" weather for filming.

8. When creating a product - TV programme, radio show etc - there is no such thing as a short day.

9. Editing takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R! (but I personally love it)

10. There are always people on your course who chose the subject thinking that it would be a walk in the park, and then persist in trying to avoid any kind of hard work.

Well, theres a few for you! No doubt I will come up with many more as they arise on a day to day basis! I hope if there are any fellow media students reading this, that you will see many similarities in your own lives!

(just for the record, I still do love every part of my studies..... even when things aren't always going to plan!)

  1. I'm currently studying Media for A Level and yep, I can relate!
I've got drenched multiple times filming, don't always love group work & am constantly subject to the 'not a real course' comments.
We do love it though! Brilliant post :)
